The International Driving Permit Scam

South Africa requires you to have an International Driving Permit.  I’m not entirely sure why places like France and the USA don’t require you to have one whereas Namibia and Burkino Faso do but there you go.  So if you look up International Driving Licence in Google, there are lots of sites which will sell you things which are an “International Driving Licence”.  For $40.

However, it’s not clear whether or not they’re legal or even recognised.  Just go down to your local Post Office and they’ll give you a form and it’ll cost 5.40 GBP.  If you take your driving licence, passport and a photo then they’ll give you it there and then.

Passport EwanBig technology revelation: If you get a reasonable photo of yourself then just put a few of them on a 6×4 canvas in Photoshop and you never need to sit in one of those Photo Me booths ever again.  I’m sure everybody does this.  Doh!  I’d better do one for everybody in the family.

I’m not sure whether or not commenting on your own posts is kosher but further to the International Driving Permit thing, it’s important to choose the right person at the post office. My person took 15 minutes to fill in five lines and stamp the licence twice. Aargh.
